GARBAGE Compactor machine

In the waste management industry, garbage compactor trucks are highly important because they make garbage disposal easier. This is achieved by compressing garbage to smaller size to free up space when garbage are dumped at disposal sites. Garbage compactor truck is just any truck that has an inner built compactor system. And as you know it; a compactor system is a device used to compress the size of refuse matter.

There are not many types of garbage trucks in action around. The common types are the front loader, rear loader and side loader garbage compactor truck. Differences in their operations are not much, but a striking difference lays in the positioning of the truck.

Generally, these common three types of garbage compactor truck utilize a loader in the process of picking up the garbage containers. They also consist of in-built compactors with packer blades that are used to compact the waste when transferring them into a hopper.

Here is a general process for garbage trucks in action.

For front loader garbage truck and rear loader; the truck must be positioned in a way that the garbage bin or container faces the back of the truck. For the side loader, the operator will have to park the truck in a position that the bin will be on the side of the truck with the loader. A space of 12 inches between truck and garbage is well advice.

Next, the truck operator turns on the loader so that it will pick up the bin. The dashboard before the operator will guide him in this process. However at this juncture, dashboard position could differ across makes and models of truck. In the end, find a lever in the truck which you’ll use to bring down and bring forth the hands of the loader. (When the operator is not clear on the right lever for that truck make, it’s best he visits the user’s manual to find out. )

Now, lift the hopper high up and above the truck slowly and steadily and drop the garbage inside the compactor system. Avoid forcefully pushing the lever to any position because you risk making the loader to dump the bin.

Technically use the lever to return the bin onto floor. Careful handling must be implemented at this stage to avoid shattering the bin on the ground.

At this stage it is time to use the compactor system. Turn on the compactor machine to compress the garbage before picking up another garbage bin.

Like smaller vehicles, accidents are common when driving garbage trucks. However, more precautionary steps are taken in navigating this size. It is always advisable not to drive fast and to slow down even further before taking turns because the truck is full and heavy and may tilt over when turns are made at full speed. It is also correct to make use of a mirror to ensure that no one is in the hopper before the compactor system is activated.

In modern homes however, there are trash compactors used to compress home garbage into smaller, This is because a compressed garbage frees up space for extra garbage. Usually an internal metal ram is used in breaking the garbage into smaller particles which are subsequently gotten rid of through the trash compactor bag.

Trash compactors at home don’t ever have many components; basically it’s just the metal ram for crushing garbage into pieces, a bin that holds the trash, and a switch which is used to turn on the machine.

It’s operation is easy.

You first open the cover of the compactor and fill the bin. But remember to put bottles and cans inside the bin first and lay them down on their sides. Big-sized garbage are also put in the center of bin. Not to worry if you fill the bin wrongly a censor will notify you, and when full, proceed to shut the cover and activate the switch.

Remember when loading a trash compactor, it is not every trash that you load into it. Glass items and chemical waste are disallowed. Organic waste can cause odor. Basically trash compactors are ideal for squeezing groups of cardboard products, metal scraps, plastic, and aluminium cans in individual groups especially if you intend to sell them off as scraps. Otherwise you can load them all as a perfect mixture and compact.

There are some tips that will guide you in order to steer clear from harm when operating the compactor machine.

1. Always make good use of the lock key of the trash compactor when it is not in use.

2. Avoid loading the trash compactor the quantity it cannot handle. It can harm the unit.

3. Do not touch any moving component when it is running. Also do not switch on a faulty unit.

4. Extension cords and trash compactors are not good mixtures. Instead, make use of a 3-teethed outlet.

Well that’s how to use a trash compactor at home or your place of work.

Anyway, just like other electrical appliances, garbage compactors can become faulty and in such situation a garbage compactor repair becomes necessary. It is worthy to note that many garbage compactor faults stem from spoilt switches, worn sprockets, power nuts and roller bearings. Garbage remnants forgotten inside the unit can also slow compaction. Note: Do not to put in aerosol cans or combustible waste into the trash compactor because electrical faults can trigger combustion.

I’ll tell you how to understand if your trash compactor is faulty and what you can do to salvage it.

1. When the trash compactor won’t come on after turning on its switch

– shut its drawer and test the electrical cord.

– reconnect severed wires.

– check drawer safety as well as on/off switch.

– check the motor.

2. When the compactor comes alive but stops shortly afterward

– check its top-limit switch or motor

3. If the metal ram doesn’t move even motor is on

– look out for any spoilt chain

– or a damaged drive gear

4. When the trash compactor makes strange sounds

– find out lubrication directions from the user’s guide.

5. Occasionally clean remnants of garbage inside the power screw threads for effective compaction.

In the case of replacement of any damaged part which cannot be fixed by any of these steps above, spare parts are usually supplied by manufacturers, market suppliers and local appliance parts stores.

Whether you want to replace faulty parts by yourself, or you’re an appliances repairer and would like to learn how to; you must have these important tools.

– Screwdrivers

– Wrenches

– Nut driver

– Multimeter

Dismantling the trash compactor

i. Switch off the breaker

ii. Take out the compactor from its closet by losing the screws binding it.

iii. Use your wrench tool to take away the top as well as side cover panels.

iv. Take out the bottom panel, look out for garbage remnants which may drop.

v. To reach into the motor, switches and chain you take away the cover panels.

vi. Take out the fasteners that hold firm, the control panel. Next you test the electrical cord, motor, switches, et cetera with a multimeter.

INSTRUCTIONS : How to use a trash compactor

Refer to the user’s guide for tips with regards to sourcing the replacement parts. However, when placing orders for any spare part, ensure you inform them the trash compactor’s model as well as serial number indicated next to the door of the machine. Also find in the guide, tips on greasing your machine as well as maintaining it. Doing these can extend your machine’s effective performance for years to come.

Furthermore, if the trash compactor chain needs to be changed or is not steady and has to be adjusted, then proceed with these guidelines;

i. Pull out the trash compactor’s electrical cord.

ii. Dismantle its unit to reach the motor.

iii. Take out motor mounting bolts and motor itself.

iv. Reach to the shaft and discard the drive gear.

v. A chain is found at the drive gear’s rear sprocket, take it away.

vi. Take out all power screws from the frame, but avoid removing the nuts of the power screws.

vii. Take off the chain from the sprockets.

viii. Load another fresh chain around the sprockets and enhance the chain’s tension.

ix. Assemble the unit.

x. Change the unit’s circuit fuse.

TIP: Always remember to adjust the tension in the drive chain at least twice a year because when it is too loose it spoils damage gears and sprockets. Take out the unit and pay an appliance repairer a visit if this is too much for you.

Well, that’s about all for now on garbage compactor repair. Let’s proceed to garbage compactor maintenance. Aside reaching an agreement with any service and maintenance agency, you can opt to do all maintenance by your self on a daily or weekly routine and save cost. It is worthy to note that a proper maintenance actually starts from buying the right size. In other words you can’t maintain a small trash compactor that compacts large garbage. So it’s safe to pick your size; pick big if you generate a lot of garbage at home or work on daily basis.

The first maintenance tip lies in using it properly. Every step by step use of a garbage compactor has been stipulated. Ignorance on the proper use of garbage compactor is what will ultimately ensure it gets faulty day after day. And that you waste your time or spend too much on maintenance.

Another tip lies in keeping the machine clean. It’s best to dismantle it as earlier instructed, and remove every piece of debris stuck inside right after compaction and disposal. Special care in ensuring the region around the power unit is clean from dust or debris after use please.

Also, occasionally grease the door hinges and lock assembly for a smoother compression by the metal gram. And that’s all for a simple maintenance of your home or office garbage compactor.

Dear reader, work in the waste management could be trashy but the pay compensates for the smell. As a matter of fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the average hourly wage for a garbage truck driver in the U.S. is $16.55, approximately a yearly pay of $34,420 for the garbage truck drivers. So garbage truck driving could be lucrative if you search right. And the pay for their garbage truck worker beside the wheels is not far different from those for the driver.
